Which type of solar panel mounting best suits your camper roof?
Deel
When installing solar panels on your camper's roof, choosing the right mounting materials is essential. Depending on the type of roof your camper has, we offer various mounting options in our range. Below, we provide an overview of the most suitable mounting methods for panel vans and campers with a flat roof.
Mounting for Panel Vans
For panel vans, we generally recommend aluminum Z-profiles. These anodized aluminum profiles are perfect for mounting solar panels on panel vans due to their narrow design. They fit precisely on or between the raised edges of a panel van's roof.

Advantages of Aluminum Z-Profiles:
- Suitable for panels up to 140Wp and 225Wp: For solar panels up to 140Wp, use a set of 4 Z-profiles, and for larger panels up to 225Wp, use a set of 6 Z-profiles.
- Easy installation: The profiles are attached to the roof with two small holes and riveted. Additionally, sealant (Sikaflex 521UV) is applied under the profiles to keep out dirt and moisture.
- Sturdy mounting: The solar panels are pre-attached to the Z-profiles with bolts and nuts, ensuring a stable and secure installation.
Although plastic corner brackets and plastic mounting spoilers are also an option, they are often too large for the profile of a panel van's roof. If you choose to mill them out, they can still be made suitable. However, the Z-profiles remain the most logical and practical choice.
Mounting for Flat Camper Roofs
For campers with a flat roof, it is best to use plastic corner brackets or plastic mounting spoilers. When choosing plastic (or aluminum) mounting spoilers, use the width of the solar panel as a starting point. So, if your solar panel is 55cm wide, you should also choose a spoiler that is 55cm wide. The mounting materials are easy to install and ensure a neat finish.

Advantages of Plastic Corner Brackets and Mounting Spoilers:
- Easy preparation: Both the corner brackets/spoilers and the roof are lightly sanded and treated with a primer (Sikaflex 209 for plastic roofs or Sikaflex 206GP and an Activator for metal roofs).
- Strong adhesion: After applying the primer, the corner brackets or spoilers can be sealed onto the roof with a construction adhesive like Sikaflex 252.
- Pre-mounting solar panels: It is convenient to place the solar panels on the corner brackets or spoilers beforehand, so that the entire assembly can be attached to the roof at once. The solar panels themselves are attached to the corner brackets or spoilers with self-tapping screws.
By choosing the right mounting method, you ensure not only a safe and stable installation of your solar panels but also a longer lifespan and optimal performance of your system.
To see exactly how many solar panels will fit on your roof, you can use our Camper Roof Planner. For Z-profiles, you need to add a total of 6cm to the width of the panel if it is placed in the direction of travel, and 6cm to the length of the panel if you place it crosswise on the camper. When using mounting spoilers, 16cm is always added to the length of the panel. For corner brackets, 16cm is added to both the width and the length. Please keep this in mind when filling out the Roof Planner!
