Why choose a solar panel for my camper van
Deel
A solar panel on your campervan is not only nice to have, but also offers many other benefits:
- You generate your own energy
- You save money at a campervan site with electricity hook-up
- You are less dependent on, or completely independent of, a campervan site with 230V mains electricity
- You make your campervan sustainable
How much power is actually needed?
Many appliances in the campervan can operate 'normally' on the 12V battery*. Appliances that operate on 230V can also be connected via a DC/AC inverter. The solar panel's task is to charge the battery* and thus keep it topped up. How much power you need depends, among other things, on:
- the appliances used in the campervan (energy balance);
- the extent to which you want to be able to go off-grid;
- the time of year you are travelling;
- the 12V/24V battery bank*. The battery must, of course, be large enough to power the appliances.
* Your campervan actually has two batteries: your starter battery and your leisure battery / house battery / service battery. By 12V/24V battery (bank), we always mean this leisure battery and not the starter battery.
