Discover which type of battery best suits your travel needs
Deel
Before deciding on solar panels, it is crucial to determine the correct battery size for your camper or boat. The battery bank acts as a buffer between various energy sources such as solar panels, alternators, and consumers like refrigerators and lighting. A well-balanced battery capacity is essential for reliable and efficient operation of your electrical system, especially when going off-grid.
How do you calculate your daily energy needs?
To start, you need to calculate your vehicle's daily energy needs. This includes all devices you want to power throughout a day. Think of lighting, cooling, heating, water pumps, electronics, and other devices you use during your travels.
- Determine energy consumption: Make a list of all devices and their power consumption in Amp-hours (Ah) or Watt-hours (Wh). Determine how long each device is used per day.
- Calculate daily energy consumption: Multiply the power consumption of each device by its usage time per day to calculate the total daily energy requirement in Ah or Wh.
- Account for system losses: Approximately 20% of the generated energy is lost due to inverters, charge controllers, wiring, and other components. Add these losses to your total energy requirement to determine the required battery capacity.
How big should your battery bank be?
The size of your battery bank depends on several factors:
- Autonomy: How many days do you want to be able to stay without external charging?
- Depth of Discharge (DoD): For lead-acid batteries, it is recommended not to discharge deeper than 50% to maximize lifespan.
- Cyclic life: This refers to the number of times a battery can be charged and discharged before its performance degrades.
- Starter batteries versus semi-traction batteries: Starter batteries are designed for short-term high current consumption and are not suitable for deep discharges as required in house batteries for campers and boats.
- Capacity calculation: A 100 Ah starter battery only provides about 5 Ah of usable energy, while a 100 Ah semi-traction battery provides about 50 Ah of usable energy.
- Charging with solar panels: To optimally charge a lead-acid battery with solar panels, consider the average sun hours per day, especially in the Netherlands from April to October (average 4 hours).
A rule of thumb is to choose a battery bank that can cover at least two days of your energy consumption without recharging. This gives you a safe margin for unforeseen circumstances and cloudy days when solar panels provide less energy.
Lifespan of semi-traction lead-acid batteries
Semi-traction lead-acid batteries (such as wet, GEL, or AGM batteries) have a limited cyclic capacity that depends on the depth of discharge. A typical depth of discharge of 50% significantly extends the battery's lifespan compared to deeper discharges.
Example: A 100 Ah semi-traction battery with a DoD (Depth of Discharge) of 50% can handle between 1100-1280 cycles before its capacity significantly decreases. With a DoD of 100%, this is only 375-430 cycles.
Important considerations when choosing a battery:
Charging with both solar panels and alternator
Combining solar panels with an alternator offers advantages such as faster charging times and increased energy savings. A larger battery can not only increase buffer capacity but also improve charging speed and efficiency when used in combination with an alternator.
Consider lithium batteries
Lithium batteries offer an alternative to lead-acid batteries with advantages such as higher energy density, lighter weight, and a higher cyclic capacity without the adverse effects of deep discharge. They are more expensive to purchase but often offer better long-term value for money.
Ventilation
With traditional wet lead-acid batteries, gas can form during charging, which requires ventilation of the space. Sealed AGM batteries largely eliminate this problem and are therefore safer for use in enclosed spaces such as campers and boats.
